nah-ee-lah is a writer and a business person. her writing manifests into music, theatre, poetry, articles and film. she works and performs in canada, the united states, south america and south africa.next spring her new web-based company will launch chameleon, a full length album featuring nah-ee-lah’s writing, live musicianship and solid production. its content is best described as: “soul under urban influence.” her first company, yah ga yah productions, produced the award winning album nah-ee-lah:free dome, a chapbook, a series of multi-lingual poetry evenings, cultural events in conjunction with black theatre workshop and youth newspapers for leave out violence. her plays include stuck (2001) and yagayah (1999) co-written with d’bi.young & published in testifyin’: contemporary african canadian drama vol. 2, edited by djanet sears (2003.) both plays were produced and toured by bcurrent for the rock.paper.sisters. theatre festival. they have also appeared in the africanadian playwrights festival. nah-ee-lah has a b.a. with distinction from concordia university and is currently pursuing concurrent m.f.a. and m.b.a. degrees at york university in toronto. naila means one who succeeds. nah-ee-lah is its phonetic spelling. eight years ago, soon after she emerged on the toronto spoken word scene, she began using nah-ee-lah. now she goes by either or both: nah-ee-lah / naila belvett.
